Firstly, for the check light, does it extinguish after first application of the brake?  if so, then its only the inbuilt circuit checkinmg mechanism.  If not, then one of the lamps will be out, just a case of defining which.  System is a tad sensitive to bulb makes....  Gen VX is relatively cheap on Trade Club.

As to the heating/demisting then hold, I think, auto and off together for a few seconds until you hear all the servo's resetting.  May make a difference.   :y

Think he means push the 'off' & 'auto' buttons at the same time on the climate control panel untill you hear a noise. :)
Check the pollen filter aswell this will cause misting if dirty.

There is a vent inside the boot right bottom behind  the panel under the cd player or first aid box often covered with items from the boot may help to make sure it is free of obstruction

If your brake lights on ok and the warning is on the MID then probable you have a make of bulb fitted the system does not like (eg Halfords bulbs)  Use either genuine Vx ( a tad pricey) or I've found Ring bulbs work ok.
