Smoke / Exhaust fumes out the Engine
« on: 28 December 2009, 09:50:36 »

I am getting What I thought was smoke, but now think is Exhaust fumes from the passenger side of the engine, looks to be coming out from under the heatshields

Does seem worse on short trips...

Had the plenum off to check cam cover gaskets, all fine, plugs all dry.

Any ideas?

been using any WD40, or other oils? When i was soaking the exhaust manifold nuts for the flexi change, it smoked like a good-un after starting.

Deffo not coolant.

Its done it on and off for a while...

may not be coincidence that ive not given her a long run for a while to burn anything off.

Off for a run into Wales today, will see how it goes, something somewhere isnt quite right thats for sure.

Is it almost a rubbery type smell? If so, it might be spray from the road on the exhaust. Don 't know if it's the salt they're using, but I've noticed this recently when it's wet / slushy.

I smelt that just before xmas. It turned out it was the putty used for badging the exhaust melting ;D

Excuse me if this is daft (not being familiar with V6s), but are you sure it isn't a camcover gasket leak from the outside edge of the cover, adjacent to the exhaust manifold? Is that edge fully visible with heatshield in place?

Big thanks to Mark, who took one sniff after we were driving the kids to the park and said Thats Semi Synth  ;D ;D ;D

under an hour later he had resealed the camcover....didnt seem to be leaking....

but no smoke since, little smelly, but that will burn off in time  ;D

unfortunately back to smoking like hell again.

any ideas?

im thinking could be time for a new cam cover?  or worth trying new gasket and orings?

the last reseal certainly seemed to help. but not for long...
