Well, I think it is when standing.

I first detected this over the recent cold weather, when I got a tapping noise and low oil warning light. I checked the level and it didn't even get to the bottom of the dipstick. I refillled to just below max but a couple of days later it had dropped to min.

Previously, when my cc gaskets have failed and leaked, I've had a bit of smoke from the heatshields and manifolds when stopped, and a small drop or two of oil on the ground.

Now, I get no smoke, but a lot more oil on the ground, so much so that I lost a couple of litres (from just below max to about min) over a few days (that included a bit of driving).

I have felt round the cam covers and can't detect any fresh oil.

I'm beginning to suspect something worse as it now seems this is not the gaskets.

As my oil level is now getting low I am seeing less oil on the ground than when I topped up which reinforces my suspiscion that it happens when standing.

What could cause these symptoms?
Crank seal? Something else?
Should I do a more thorough check of the cc gaskets?
I have some new to replace just in case.

Where is the oil dripping from with respect to the car....and where on the engine is dirty?

Any recent work e.g. oil cooler change etc?

2 Lts? Jesus thats a hell of a lot to drop overnight. Is the sump plug and oil filter tight and sealed correctly? Thats the first place I would look, then the camcovers.
The amount needed to top up between the dipstick high and low marks is 1 ltr, not 2.
If you have been putting 2 lts in it is almost bound to drop oil.
Give it a good wash off and a nice steady run to dry it off. Then park it on level ground, I put a piece of cardboard down, have a good look round underneath after it has stood for a while and that will tell you if there is a leak and roughly where from unless it is running across and then down.
I wash mine off every month with a power washer, just plain water and providede that you keep it aimed away from the top of the dis pack and don't direct it into the air intake it should be fine. Mine has never failed to start afterwards and has never misfired either. I leave the bonnet up and let it tickover for about 3 mins to help it dry.

I don't think it lost 2 litres overnight, more like over a few days, and there was no oil on the dipstick at all when I topped it up with a few (2 or 3 can't remember) litres. When topped up it didn't quite reach max so I'm sure I didn't overfill.

I haven't had chance to check the sump plug and filter but I do think it is running across/down as I get a few spots where the oil drips on the ground.

I'm hoping to get the car on a lifter soon but thought in the meantime there might be something easy to check.
