2.0 Engine dying - best remedy?

I have started having a bottom end rattle when starting from cold. Once the oil light goes out the engine sounds sweet.

I have recently had the head gasket repaired, tyres and tracking sorted, new clutch new exhaust including the Cat, have both front legs to replace (courtesy of Daz), overall the car is in fair condition for its age. its a '96 N reg.

My problem is what to do with it.....

I asked Daz about rebuilding it, but he thinks it's good money after bad, and a big job to do.....

I could replace the engine, if I could get a good one....

I say sod it and get rid of it and get a replacement.....

Firstly, has anyone got a GOOD 2.0 engine in their back pocket, maybe even the whole car at a push......

Is there anyone who is interested in rebuildng the engine.... Must be capable of having the car and remove and refit the engine and reliably rebuild the bottom end.... depending on the cost!

The other option is another car.... It would have to be reliable, and preferably had the Cam belt changed but this would not be an issue if it was a 2.0, not bothered what it is, drive, age and body is not an issue, but would prefer a 2.5 if changing car....


I am open to suggestions, I've got about £400 to spend, either on the engine, a replacement engine or another car.

Cheers Rob, I've stuck some oil additive in it to keep it going, but it wont last forever and it's bound to go at the worst time!

Please keep me posted, any idea when, what price and do you know any history to it?

I would change the oil and filter first and see if if there is any improvement. The oil additive might make it worse as some of these products can restrict oil flow through the filter

I did change the filter again the oil and filter  was changed recently when the head gasket was changed.

is it a split sump or the all in one, if split sump easy to fix with out taking the engine out. found a kit at vx to replace parts big ends £40+vat.:y

Thanks for that Rusty, I honestly didn't know there was different sumps. I'll check in daylight tomorrow.... I assume it's obvious?

If the car is garaged (or can be) at night, I'd be tempted to rig up a little fan-heater on a timer, to give the sump a warm-up for half an hour before you normally head out.  Might be able to set it up so you can leave it in position, and just drive over it if you can find a low profile one.

That will make the oil get round the engine much quicker/easier from cold start, and may give your engine a fair while longer to live.
Kenlowe preheater is another option, but not nearly as cheap (I have one on my Golf and do recommend them though). The Kenlowe things heat the coolant though, so the oil in the sump doesn't warm up much, until it hits the rest of the engine.
