multi rams not working
« on: 01 February 2010, 16:26:30 »

as above
vac pipes ok
non return valve on the brake servo pipe replaced
ram actuators x 2 move if i apply direct suction
no leaks apparent
heaters working ok
same problem whether i bypass the front  vac tank or not

lost my test meter / lamp so i can't check for voltage at the plugs at the moment

engine is a 3 ltr BUT is running on a 2.5 ecu

are the solinoids fused ?

opinions welcome

cheers  steve

i have been known to be wrong. have you checked the valve on the back of the plenum and also the diaphrapm in the black valve on the back of the plenum may be split.

I currently have the same issue. I changed PAS pump and noticed it after rebuild, so I am unsure if it was like it before or if I have put the vacs on all wrong.
I think it is nearly always a vac issue, looking at the vac map it can be the t-piece under scuttle or the front vac tank. I would think it unlikely for both actuators to fail :-[

So that lump onm the brake servo pipe is a non return valve? Did you get it on its own or as part of a new pipe assy?

I struggled to get the solenoids to actually move; simply revving (even to high RPM) doesn`t seem to provoke them; I found revving, then again (before the revs, die back too much) and then really 'going for it'* on the third-go made the front servo 'flash' into action....but, blink and you`ve missed it.
*There are obvious concerns about engine age/condition/health etc. if doing this.

Multiram system operation is load dependent; so visually testing on the drive is always going to be tricky.

I discovered that my vacuum pipes had been incorrectly connected; so, best to double-check the vacuum-pipe layout:

got the valve from vx  :y
part number 90304535
cost me 10 quid plus the vat  :y
the hose asembly is a bit of a tw*t too get apart so i got a length of air brake servo hose from the local motor factors and made my own  :y
the brake pedel is alot better but the rams still don't want too play  >:(

debs ............ have been through the pipes .......AGAIN and still know luck  :'(
arhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh   ;) :'( :'(

Hmmm,

taking on board Debs point about multirams really only working under load, I am thinking of devising a test involving tape to attatch thin strips of paper, then going for a drive to see if they get torn.

Another day though. Today, for the first weekend in a long time, is a non car repair day :) Trouble is, dont know what to do with myself :y

the easist way to check if the rams are working is drive up the road normally. then find a nice straight piece of road put the S button in and floor it you should hear aa loud roaring noise thats the rams working. and what a glorius noise it is.

Two thoughts......

1: Have you definitely got vacuum at the supply (suction) pipe at the vacuum accumulator; the one off-side (ish) low-down behind the radiator/intake assembly?.....that plastic pipe on mine had 'gunk' restricting the vacuum (discovered using a cheap Gunson 'Low Gauge').....I rodded it through with some small dia. wire.
If you just have a 'Mark 1digital gauge' (your finger) ;D you still should have a noticeably detectable 'suck' present at that small-bore pipe which connects at it`s other end to brake servo pipe-tee.

2: Might the vacuum accumulator be cracked/leaking?

as Debs suggets, is it worth removing each pipe in turn with engine running and physically checking for suck at each point? beware fans and safety etc.

tech 2 can actuate the multirams individually which helps diagnosis if your near a relevant admin.

Fitted a new vac tank last week as the old one was fubar.

Like Tigers, If I bypass the solenoid the actuator works fine. Might try disconnecting the electrical plug and triggering them with a spare battery, that or persue the paper/maidens hair strand idea.

Resorting to outside help ie tech 2 seems a bit like cheating at this stage :y
