I like to check my tyre pressures every fortnight and I'm finding that I lose 4psi each time I check the fronts.

I guess it could be the valve but having read a bit about the wheels I know some of them are 'soft' so could it also be the seal between the wheel rim and the tyre?  I have to admit the tyres aren't a premium brand.

I have these wheels:
a bit of spit on the valve can check that. wheel off and put some water at rim / tyre join or into the bath..the tyre that is
Fair point on the valve, easy thing to check, but will have to wait 'til SWMBO is out before I start putting the wheel in the bath  ;D.
swmbo ? sorry... I will probably regret this but whats the acronym?
I think he means "SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED" ;D ;D :y
could it be OFFERED

wouldnt like to say if thats normal air loss over a fortnight or a possible puncture if there is a nail os screw etc stuck in the tyres. Strange that both fronts are loosing the same amount, are the fronts differant to th rear?
Wheels and tyres are identical all round.  Will check over them both at the weekend in good light to see if there's a nail/screw etc.  Then will check the valve and if all else fails I guess is the seal between the rim and the tyre.

A trip to WIM is on the cards so will get them to take a look if it's not the valve or something else causing the pressure loss.

Such a very slow air loss can sometimes be because a thorn (e.g from a hedge) has punctured and become embedded in the tyre.....`ask me how I know! ::)

They can be very difficult to find, however; often only by demounting the tyre and stroking your hand fully around the entire inner surface of the tyre.

A 'good' tyre-shop/garage would be prepared to spend sufficient time doing this to fix the problem for good.
My local tyre-shop charged £10. for the leak-search, repair, a new valve and the re-balancing.

Alloys start oxidising on the inner rim where the tyres seals, this process forms a light crust which is porous,a good tyre fitter will always give this area a sanding over and remove previous sealant before reapplying sealant and fitting the new tyre.Very common complaint with alloy wheels.

I occassionally have this problem with my front tyres and usually find they need removing then re-sealing.
Some alloys are particularly soft (as my Azev alloys are) and can be prone to dents/buckles in the rim (especialy with all the potholes in the roads at the moment) which allow air to escape. I've had to have mine straightened with a copper mallet more than once.

I had the same problem on both my front alloy wheels. I took the tyres off and sanded the insides of alloy wheels then painted smooth silver hammerite on. Job done. It has been over a year now and no leaks at all.  :y
