2.2 dti, what to look for
« on: 24 February 2010, 12:52:44 »

looking out for a 2.2dti omega and was looking for advice and if people could tell me about common issues with this engine, well then that would be great. Also when must the timing chain be renewed inspected.

check oil change intervals, like most derv units, problems begin when people don't keep on top of oil changes.

I have one with 152k on the clock and it sounds as sweet as a nut but sorry I don't know if there is a specific change limit. I would suggest it is like any other chain cam engine in that when it wears you will hear it. I am interested in what others have to say on the matter

I would also be interest in all the facts, due to now running a 2.2Dti and not really know much about it.

Luckily it has a Full Vauxhall Service History, and is only 40k on the clock on an 03 plate, so fingers crossed should have plenty of life left in the old girl.

Only one little issue at the moment but hope to have that sorted end of this month when it is due its next yearly service. (See my other post about Engine Management Light)

Engine generally reliable if looked after.  Common issues are blocked pressure sensors, jammed egrs, turbos throwing too much oil out etc.  These are all signs of poor oil servicing (partly due to Vauxhall's marketing and over hyping the full synth oil).

Oil change intervals were 20K / 1 year, obviously if you can find an example with more changes than standard then it can only be a good thing.

I've heard that the fuel pump problems can be down to modern fuels and the additives that are in them, someone here (MDTM IIRC) suggests adding a small amount of 2 stroke oil to each full tank of fuel

i`ve had the vectra 2.2dti and now own the omega 2.2dti, i found the engine in the vectra to be very good indeed, fantastic pulling power and very good mpg,, it had the best service history i have every seen (having a new diesel pump fitted at a cost of around £2550!!!!!!) and you could really tell it had been looked after, i changed all the filters on it and even tho it was running great it ran even better, it really felt like it had another 15bhp,
my omega tho had no history at all and very lack lusture,, the turbo needs replacing as its leaking oil and the blades are smashed, changing the filters as improved it somewhat and hope after i change the turbo it will pull stronger.
so the 2 things i`d look for are service history and as the diesel pump been changed.
 hope this help./
ps in the vectra i got average of 42mpg mixed driving
get 38mpg from the omega at mo but hope that will improve when fittted new parts

Omega is a fair bit heavier, so would expect less acceleration and slightly less mpg.

just one more thing to add to the list, my crank pulley split and fell off ( separated from the rubber bonded to the inner)
i`m not sure how you would check for that but i also noticed the auto tensioner for the alternator belt was worn and maybe that was a factor.

Yes - Crank pully also failed on mine, Tell tale sign for the pully or tensioner is a slight squeak on start up or pulling away from juctions. (belt snatch)
If the tensioner/ pully goes please use a new high tensile bolt to fix the tensioner back  on with. Having changed the pully with the old tensioner re fitted, the tensioner fell off a week later when the fixing bolt sheared.
Other than what has already been said the leak off pipes can cause  endless cranking with no starting, in common with other models.
