Exhaust smell in cabin
« on: 27 February 2010, 18:46:30 »

Hi guys,

just want to run this past you all and see if anyone else has had this happen to them, could be something but most likely nothing.

This afternoon was driving back home from the shops and stopped at a set of traffic lights, was stationary for about a couple of minutes when i started to smell a strong smell of exhaust fumes come through the air ducts into the cabin.

I would expect this if a car was in front of me but this time there was not. Accelerated away and smell went until i stopped at the next traffic lights and the smell came back.

Have owned the car since July last year and this is the first time i have smelt exhaust fumes inside the car. Car seems to be running fine, back of exhaust changed last April, the only problem i do have at the moment are codes 430 and 420 Cat Efficiency which i have not been able to sort out yet.

Many thanks

Dave

It could be something as simple as a manifold gasket or downpipe to cat gasket allowing fumes to escape into the engine bay and be drawn into your cabin.

Probably a leak in the exhaust system centre pipes.

Hold a rag over the exhaust outlet and listen for the chuffing sound coming from towards the front of the car.

On second thoughts, may be worth getting someone else to do the rag thing whilst you grovell underneath.....  ;)

cheers for the reply guys, will wait unit the weather improves before i start to grovel underneath the car.

Will a leak in the manifold or down pipes possibly cause the cat efficiency codes and emmisions light to come on?
