Hi all,

Following advice on here, purchased Vx spark plugs, oil filter and oil.
Took it to my local mechanic, but on changing the plugs, he found in 4 out of the 6 housings, pools of oil.

Nothing in the cyclinders, just the spark plug housing.

The car is running fine, no smoke seen from the exhaust. There is oil leaking at the back of the engine. That was plain to see on draining the oil sump.

Any ideas?  :-/

Sounds like the cam cover gaskets are leaking,it's common on V6's.The breather system needs cleaning out and then the gaskets need replacing.To save money in the long run and not do the job twice or more purchase genuine Vx gaskets.Aftermarket one don't seem to last very long.There is a how to in the maintenance section.

I've read a few of the posts on Cam Gaskets going... oh well, suppose it could have been worse!

Any suggestions on how best to clean as much oil off the engine as possible? Are there companies that can "steam" clean them?

Gunk is generally a good engine cleaner (exterior of not engine internals) I am sure there are other members of the forum with recommendations for this sort of job as well.

steam cleaning is not good for modern engines .. far too much electronics IMHO ...  and I'm not for high pressure washers either ..

Old fashioned "Gunk" or "Jizer" put on with an old paint brush then rinsed off using the jet from a garden pressure sprayer is my way .....  takes a while but it works and the "delicate" parts don't get a load of high pressure water/steam squirted into them.

Electronics, bearings, ribbed belts,   I don't think high pressure water or steam does them any good whatsoever. I know they are exposed to wind/rain etc .. but that is NOT at any great pressure.

Just my thoughts .. nowt else ..

For your problem .. a cheap "turkey baster" might be useful to take as much oil out of the plugwells before you start on the paper towels !!!
