Problem starting car and misfiring
« on: 22 March 2010, 05:27:35 »

My car has been is very reluctant to start every morning or any other time as long as the engine is cold!
After the car warms up, it runs smoothly for the whole day until the egine gets cold.
I basicaly start the car and it starts briefly....shudders and goes off...this happens for about  3 or 4 times....then on the fifth attempt....the car starts very rough running....vibrates alot and the car misfires once or twice... then it starts idlying normal and after 2 minutes the car is running perfect...no other problems for the rest of the day until  next time when the engine is cold....

I have noticed an oil leak just above where the gear box meets the egine and the mechanic had alook at it and recommended chaning the head gaskets to curb the oil leak, but i think the oil is leaking becuase some pipes or breathers are blocked. They have cleaned the Throttle body twice..but no joy.
Did a tech II and no error codes were reported. Any ideas please...its starting to get frustrating as the problem has been going on for about 4 weeks :-[

Turn the ignition off, disconnect the connector to the MAF and start her up with the MAF disconnected. If she starts and idles better, a fubar MAF could be your problem. If it dosen't at least you know thats one thing it's not. You should also check the air tunking between air filter and throttle body for splits in the underside.

Any more ideas before i take the car to my local STEALERS (a bit unfair on the dealers here as their labour charge is 40 quid a day!!) but they will truly shaft you if you ask them to get parts for you....

I'm afraid Gaffers had a slip of of the pen earlier mate, your car doesn't have a seperate ICV. As yours is a 2.2, it has a Throttle Body, which is the lump of aluminium at the other end of the air intake trunking from the air filter box. You will find a 'howto' in the Maintenance section for cleaning this (you will need a new gasket but this is cheap) (here at any rate!). HTH  :y

This trick seems to have yielded very good results. Basically the i disconnected the MAF as advised and the car fired straight during the first attempt, there was no shudder,no misfire just smooth idylling.
I had a spare new MAF replaced it today and will see how tommorow morning goes.... Looks good so far. ;)

Sounds like a 'result' and you're on the right track. :y
A word of caution don't use cheap pattern MAFs, I've been there recently and got the T-shirt. (£33.00 for a pattern MAF and it lasted all of a week) Genuine Siemens replacement £65 but still going strog....thus far.
Good luck

Rather than rubbish the part you've bought, keep an eye on it and see how it goes, you may get lucky!
