low ATF would cause slipping, not really a whine, suggests torque converter   :-/

To check ATF, take drain plug out, have the engine running on a level surface, and go through the gears checking the level, it should be level with the fill plug

As tunnie says, on level surface, engine running, undo filler bolt.

As oil grows in volume as it is used, expect a fair amount to come out.  Should be at the level of the filler hole.
