Wheelarch repair

Does anyone have any experience of getting a rear wheelarch repaired - i.e. if its rusty.

What are the pros/cons & a possible cost of such a job?

Hi Rob, from my experience any paintwork/body panel repairs are best left to the professionals. DIY jobs I have done on previous cars have never met my expectations in terms of an acceptable finish (usually because of the lack of specialist equipment and the facilities needed).

I would suggest getting some quotes from a few local body shops.  Personal recommendations are best if you know anyone who has already had work done. I have used Chips Away for alloy wheel refurbishment in the past and was pleased with the results. They also lasted several years before they beagn to deteriorate again.

The problem with rust is, once it gets a hold it is very difficult to get rid of completely but the sooner you act on it the easier/cheaper the job and it will slow the process down.

As Mikes1670 says, getting rid of rust is very difficult; to do it properly the affected metal has to be cut out and new metal 'let in'. This is of course a skilled job and won't come cheaply. With an older and, with respect, less valuable car like an Omega probably the best bet is to slow down the process. As said the earlier you catch it the less damage it will do. It may be as well getting a quote or two from a bodyshop or ask around if anyone knows a local who can sort it for you. Good luck.

Hi,

I am getting this done to my 3.2 (Rog the Dodge's old car), the affected area is getting cut out and a new bit welded in, and a bit of rust on N/S rear door corner is getting done as well. £250 all in for a 3 day job
