Clutch Query
« on: 11 April 2010, 19:43:05 »

Right here we go.

As you might know I have a 2.2dti Estate 03reg Omega.

The car has only got 41,000 miles on the clock and it is fully Vauxhall Serviced.

3 or 4 years ago when it ha 20,000 on the clock my father reversed a small caravan in to a parking spot and the clutch went BANG taking the DM-Flywheel with it.

A new Flywheel and Clutch Assembly was installed all at Vauxhall Warrenty Expence. Approx £3,000 :-(

Now I have come away in the car on Friday with my 1200kg caravan in tow. Had to unfortunately do a large hill start from stand still and after getting away from the start a very large cloud of smoke appeared and the clutch started to burn, stop after a while once I continued to drive.

NOW after driving around without caravan the biting point is approx 1 to 2" from the top.

Does this sound like I have mullered the clutch or shall I approach Vauxhall and make a complaint that the clutch has only lasted 20,000 mile of careful driving.

Also what is the sort of cost for a Clutch to be FITTED? Due to I have no equipment to do this sort of task.

Cheers
Simon

When pulling away from a stop, or going up a steep hill, does the clutch noticeably slip?  Is there a continuing smell of burning clutch plate? :-/ :-/

PS In addition on a now 7 year old car that has done 20K miles since the last clutch change / claim, I don't think any type of "warranty" claim will wash with Vauxhall!

I did that with my clutch last year, attempting to move a static caravan a few feet in my garden...  Mine died fully in February this year...

Mr Clutch quoted me ~£140 iirc, just for labour charges...

The cheapest clutch I could find was on ebay, which was also the older smaller clutch plate, which I found out to my detriment...

However, Halfrauds with a trade card is £125 inc vat  (Delph brand although mine was a Sachs) and www.buypartsby was about £125 +vat (LUK Brand)

I followed the guide for the clutch and in all honesty, I would not do another, certainly without using a hydraulic ramp or inspection pit and a proper transmission jack that I can position correctly (dropping a gearbox on my arm, may have sorted my shoulder this time, but, I don't want to try to repeat my luck)...
