Required tyre size for 18" rims
« on: 18 April 2010, 23:18:42 »

Whats the recommended replacement size for standard 235/45-17's if changing to 18's?  Played with the various tyre size calculators available but nmore interested in tyre clearance on struts etc, given SP3.2's current escapades.

Any recommendations through experience, with and without the use of spacers?  Would prefer without but, open to suggestions....  :)

That will be down to wheel offset, one thing I wouldn't even consider (personally that is) is spacers though.

Rims are ET38 Irmscher Sportstars.  As said, don't want to use spacers but options listened to....  ;)

The 45 profile will go to 40 for 18" rims.

235/45-17 gives a rolling radius of 321.65 mm.  245/40-18 gives 326.6 mm.  This gives a 31mm or so difference in circumference which works out to circa 1mph so an indicated 70 gives a whisker over a true 71mph.

235/40 reduces the RR to 322.6 with negligable circumference difference.

Know the 235 clears the strut on 17's, just not so sure about the 40/18 increase..

On 18's you can run 225/40/18 with no spacers, or even 235/40/18 if you want. Really need to move to 225/35 for 19" vxr/snowflakes.

I'm running on 235 40 18 Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric the tyres give an OK quiet grippy comfort ride but mainly have really good rim protection beads. The size I would think to be correct as this size was on the wheels when I bought them s/hand off a main dealer :y :y

You can also run 265's on the rears. Cant remember if it is 30 or 35 profiles you want though - think it is 35.

Std would be 235/40 /18 (ask a dealer as they were optional fitment).

You won't get any rubbing as they are std Vx fitment.

For visuals you may like to consider spacers on the rears as they always look a bit tucked in but I would not personally.

245 40 r18 93y  sports contact 3 currently fitted to 8j sport stars on the front of my 52elite with lowered sports chassis mv6 shocks and springs. No rubbing from lock to lock. 1.10 of camber set by wim yesterday. There is just enough room to get a finger between tyre tread and spring cup, and a fraction more room than that between wheel rim and shock body.

They fit, no problem, which is a sharp relief at £344 for two tyres :o on the front. Previouly, the wheels owners had  Linglongs in the same size, two fitted on the back. (sigh)  ::)

the standard car is designed with 820 wrpm tyres, so to preserve the gearing and handling you need to be using

235/40 x 18
225/40 x 18
215/45 x 18

and those are in order grip at the top, handling at the bottom

wider tyres are possible, but of no advantage other than styling. I have 225's on the track car and to be fair, they're just too wide.
