Auto Box Gremilns?? ANy ideas please......
« on: 21 May 2010, 17:24:06 »

Autobox strangeness.......... car is a '97 2.0 CD auto with genuine 78,000 miles with fsh.... car is parked facing downhill on driveway overnight, went to go to work this am and pulled off the drive with probably too few revs as engine cold and it was 5am,drove up the road and the box straight away changed up into second and then third at approx 10mph with the "automatic gearbox" sign coming up on the display and "check" lit up. It seemed to g into limp mode and once on the level i switched off the engine and re-started and all was ok....... drove home this aftrenoon fine... anyone any ideas????? thanks  :-?

first thing to do is check the fluid level or if its not been done before a fluid change, theres a howto in the maintenance section

If the fluid level is ok it could be gearbox selector switch if it is a similar box layout to 2.5 etc. Plenty of other threads with this issue and a help guide in the maintenance section. It can be cleaned and as you have found, switching ignition off resets fault. I'm not familiar with 2.0 but on V6 the switch sensor is underneath on LHS of gearbox housing.

As said there are many threads on this. Not sure if your set up is the same as my 3.2 but changing the ATF and filter did not seem to do anything - since I changed the crank sensor however in December it has been fine.

What is/was happening on mine was believed to be the gearbox sensing the wrong speed for the gear it was in and this triggered the limp mode - the speed signal to the gearbox from the engine is delivered by the crank sensor. When Kevin Wood  read codes with Tech 2 after crank sensor problem he cleared the speed signal codes and since then there has been no repetition. However, I am not doing as many miles as before but not sure if this should have a bearing on it given it is almost 6 months since the last time.

I think you just keep an eye on it for now and no doubt someone else who knows the setup of your car will come along as regards whether crank sensor is a possibility for your situation - i.e. it is breaking down.

must admit that i love the car and was quite worried at the thought of 'box changes or rebuilds etc..... wil update when i've done what has been suggested, cheers gang  :) :)
