Annoying fault code
« on: 20 May 2010, 13:43:30 »

Hi All

I'm after some advice and suggestions....some of you may remember a while ago i had issues with misfiring and the code P0304.... well it seems to have returned...

I've done all the obvious things like breathers, cam cover gasket, new plugs and even a brand new dis pack... if i drive on petrol it seems fine apart from idling a little bit lumpy and the code does not show, if however i run on lpg then the lumpy idle is worse and then randomly get the cylinder 4 misfire fault code come up, i have been back to the LPG Installers and had everything checked, they initally changed the injectors on cylinder three and four but to no effect. They have also recalibrated the system, and say it is running ok, fuel trims are balanced and no strange readings from ECU... so i'm puzzled :D

Any suggestions would be gratefully received....

could be the air intake on idle for the LPG dose it get better when warm or cold? when you start should run on petrol for 10sec-15, then change to LPG and have herd that some air intake valves get clogged up cos of the cross over, and they were changed to 5 min. dont know if this is the case as dont know what kit you have.

My understanding is that LPG needs a stronger spark than petrol (or more precisely it takes a higher voltage to create spark in LPG).

I would take another look at the plugs, leads and spark plugs.

Thanks Andy,

We hopefully ruled out plugs and dis pack with new geniune parts from Vauxhall.... but i suppose it isn't uncommon for one to be faulty when new... >:(

How are the leads?

Any sign of oil damage?

Brand new DIS pac fitted, no oil leaks and no oil damage to boots....

This thing is starting to get on my nerves now, LPG place have sugested that the car ECU may be at fault, but cant see that as it only happens on LPG not on petrol... >:(

Highly unlikely to be the car ECU... It's very rare for them to fail and very common for a garage who are clueless to suggest it ::)

Go back to basics...

It runs fine on petrol, yes?

It's only throwing a missfire code, yes?

Which means it's likely to be a HT fault... Check/change the plugs again. :y

Oh... And check for air leaks ;)

Oh... And check for air leaks ;)

It runs ok on petrol apart from being slightly lumpy on tickover...

The only code it is showing is P0304 and occasionally P0303, a second set of brand new plugs were fitted only last week and the brand new DIS pack was only fitted 3 weeks ago...

Have checked all round all the pipes this morning and cannot see any splits or holes anywhere, is there anywhere i should look at specifically?   :y

I have today rechecked all the breather pipes to make sure everything is still clear.

I have also rechecked all the vacuum hoses for splits holes etc, with nothing aparent...

The eml came on again last night along with a significant misfire whilst on the M5, so much so as to need to pull over switch the car off and restart and run on petrol for the remainder of the journey home which was trouble free... >:(
