Aircon
« on: 04 June 2010, 15:22:27 »

If my aircon needs re-gassing, would the whole system shut down? Including the two fans at the front?

The reason I ask, is that at the mo only the rad fan at the back is working and only when the ignition is on.  The two fans at the front arn't working at all, and I think they are supposed to come on to assist the rad fan?  They worked fine until recently, and now its getting hot in slow traffic etc.

My aircon dosn't blow cold so I'm guessing it needs regassing.... :-? and I'm wondering if that will solve the problem?

The system will certainly shut down when short of gas, but i thought that it was only the compressor that shut down. I think you are correct that the fans do help out with cooling the radiator.
I'm sure someone much better informed than I will be along with the full info!

Hmmm, sounds like 2 separate issues to me. Check the wiring to the front fans otherwise sounds like faulty thermostat. What temp is your guage rising to in traffic. Shouldn't really go much higher than 95. The fans should still come on to cool the engine even if the air-con isn't working

Regarding the air-con, the compressor stops operating when gas is low so would recommend you get a proper air-con specialist out. Don't bother with the can-refills - these are no (or not much) cheaper and don't last long. The air-con specialist will also check the air-con system for leaks and vacuum out the pipes. This shouldn't cost much more than £50.

It has crept up to nearly 100!  :o  Its fine when on the move, but the fans don't work when the engine and ignition are off.

I've recently put a new rad in so the coolant is new, and the system got a good flush.  Also fitted new fan switches.... :-/

HI mine did this today no fans on rad, and no cold aircon. It turnd out to be a 10 amp fuse under the steering wheel, now all work fine.

Have the fans worked at all since you did this work or is this when the fan problem started. May be some disturbed wiring somewhere around the fan switches.

My front fans stopped working, the aircon ceased and the engine ran hotter; with engine-cooling, cycling only on the single rear-fan.
I discovered that abrasion and corrosion had severed a single conductor in the fan loom (near the battery tray).....IIRC: it was the brown/blue wire.
I cleaned back to 'good wire' each side of the break and soldered-in a new pc. of wire and the front fans worked on both the half and full speeds thereafter and the aircon returned.

Using the 'fan-test instruction sheet' it should be possible to easily identify if it`s either a wiring fault or a switch fault. ;)

When the A/C is working it runs the two front fans on low speed.

If the gas pressure is too low it inhibits both the compressor and the front fans running on half speed. It happened to me when my last cars A/C lost pressure (and it started working again when I had the system regassed)

The fans should still run at high speed if the engine temperature gets up to about 100 degC.

Thanks for all the replies. :y

All was working fine after I fitted the new rad, and that was a couple of months ago.  Its only the last couple of days that the fans havn't worked.

I've checked all the fuses and all seems fine. I've also poked around the wiring and again it looks fine, but I'll be the first to admit that auto electrics arn't my thing :-[

Too be honest I'm not that bothered about the aircon, its the getting hot bit that worries me!! :( :(
