light ticking sound on cold start up, 1999 2.5 V6
« on: 18 June 2010, 13:18:20 »

Hello to you all, had an Omega for about 8 weeks now, great car, 1999 2.5 V6 cdx auto, 43k on the clock, only did 200 miles the year up to when I bought it, had the DIS pack done, learned in the process that vauxhall dealers are crap, can anyone shed any light on the ticking sound on cold start up, had the exhaust checked, tho could be a small hole in the manifold gasket? I use Mobil 10-40 oil, added some wynns lifter lube stuff, no improvement, the problem disappears when warmed thru, runs as quiet as a mouse.......am I being over picky? Your views will be warmly received.......Ta, Gary.

have you done an oil change and filter, ??? would do that and see if it gets better, filter may be blocked a bit. oil thicker when cold  then when warm it thins out.

You may have the start of an exhaust manifold gasket blow,as the metal will expand when gets hot and allows the blow to seal...have a look for any evidence of soot deposits to confirm above..by all acccounts it is a bit of a mare to replace gaskets especially the nearside as lots need to be removed to gain access, but have also read it can be done from below.
That is possibly the worse case ...might also be a "lazy "hydraulic tappet,as if car has done such little mileage oil dposits may have started to gum up .Cheapest option is to do a couple of very short mileage oil and filter changes of say 500-1000 miles that way you will get nice fresh oil moving around in engine..may then be worth adding some wynns valve treatment ,and give the car a couple of decent mileage runs.

Should I use same grade of oil/filter? Or go for something a little more better spec? My first Omega, so I want to look after it.......

10-40 semi-synth, oil change every 5K. Ticking---manifold gasket, tapping---lazy lifter. Update your profile, location etc :y

Join this http://www.autobahnstormers.org/site.asp £20 pa and get your trade club (TC) card for use at VX dealerships. Oil on offer at 4 x 5ltrs for the price of 3 as well as most other serviceable parts with a better than "trade" discount
