Hello, further to The Boy supplying me with the engine manual last night, needless to say I have now found a name for the stupid piece of engine that has fallen to pieces on (and off) my car.

The trouble is, I am struggling to remove the remainder of it - has anyone had the front pulley off a TD before? Please see (upside down) picture below:



Do I need to remove the main crank bolt and take the whole assembly, including big steel backing plate, off?

Any help greatly apreciated as it is making me sweat a bit at the minute!

Centre bolt can stay where it is. Give the centre a spray of plusgas, let it soak then gently prise it off with screwdrivers opposite each other

Thanks Pete. If the centre section won't slide out easily, will it come out as a full assembly so I can get it on the bench and thrash it?

I will have to find the Plusgas tonight then!

You'll need something to hold the crank still which wont be easy due to the recess of the pully. I made this one from an old spanner

Can't remember how I got it off, but I have one here.  Pretty certain it comes off similar to all other crank pulleys....

I think it should just "slide off", its probably the 202k miles of it being attached that is stopping it

I always chop off the centre bolt. Compared to the price of a new bolt, it's not really worth faffing about.

If I mind right the smaller bolt holes (m6) are the extractor bolt holes.
You just screw them in and it in turn pushes the pulley off. you only turn each a couple of turns at a time then swap over

I thought that they may have been but at least one of them seems to be a locating peg - either that or there is something stuck in the hole!

If your luck is anything like mine.. the remains of the bolt the last person used to try and back the pulley off ..

Right, turns out that the smaller holes go onto locating pegs so they were a no go. With rads still in place there is no chance of getting any decent leverage and there is no gap at the rear to get any purchase with screwdrivers.

So... water pump pulley off, special bar made up to hold crank in position and undo big tight nut - leaves me with this:



After some fairly heavy persuasion - they finally parted company, leaving me with this:



Just need to find a new one now... I shall keep you posted
