Growling engine - help in Lincoln/Grimsby?
« on: 09 July 2010, 08:27:39 »

Over the last few weeks it's getting noisier, but hard to pin down. No engine management light. Also I want to get cambelt done but don't have total confidence in Vx dealers. Would appreciate recommendations for local mechanics and/or members who could do cambelt.

"Growling" engine sounds weird, could be just a bearing or even a belt. Where are you? I am in Cleethorpes. I don't think you can do paperclip test but worth trying. Could do with more symptoms really, does it run OK with more revs? Oil light not lit?

I'm in Market Rasen. I can do paperclip tests, but there's no fault there and no warning lights on dash. It is smoother when idling, rougher under load. And there is also a definite tapping sound as well as the gravelly sound. I was also thinking belts, bearings, pulleys, but can't locate a specific source for the noise.

It sounds like oil starvation, I would like to be sure your oil pressure is OK. Sorry I can't be of more help. Do you know the history of the car? I am just wondering if it has been neglected. It does seem like there is not enough oil getting to all the engine, either because of a lazy pump or a blockage. Hope we get another opinion soon.

Run the engine without the auxiliary belt on, that will at least let you know if the problem is related to any of the components that run off it. If the noise is still there without the aux. belt on then I wouldn't drive it untill you have ascertained the timing belt components aren't at fault...

If you have a v6 engine then be aware that the water pump runs off the aux. belt so don't run the engine for long or it will overheat...

Nah, not for growling.

I would be checking for exhaust issues, cambelt, water pump and ancillaries

I have a small crack in the exhaust manifold so needs to be replaced, or can it be welded? Is second-hand or ebay a good idea for manifold, or does it have to be Vx?

Cast welding is do-able, but after the hassle of taking the thing off, paying for a specialist welder, then refitting, it is cheaper to get one from the scrappy.

Thanks Agemo - I thought maybe it could be welded in situ. The hard part looks to be drilling out the studs. Btw, there doesn't seem to be a problem with the oil.
