Noise - Pulley
« on: 05 August 2010, 20:04:38 »

My motor has starting making a loud noise, sounds like bearings coming from the pulley directly above the alternater. My car is a 2.6 v6 petrol 2001.
Is that just a tensioner or is the pulley driving something?

There's no such thing as 'just a tensioner' mate! :o
If either the guide roller or tensioner is making a racket such as you suggest, I would be leaving the car stood at home while you investigate it further. Better that than a tensioner/belt failure & a possibly ruined engine! ::) :-/

Yes Teddy. It's just a tensioner for your 'fan belt' The pulley wheel does come separate despite what some dealers will say. 15 mm socket & clockwise to remove the belt, and then normal anti-clockwise to undo the nut from the pulley.  :y  :y  :y

Hi. It sounds from your description as though you are talking about the auxilliary (air con, water pump etc) drive belt tensioner pulley.

There is a test you can do. Make a note of how the belt is routed and then remove it. Then run the engine for a short while. If the noise has gone then there is a fair chance that it is the pulley bearing. If you spin it whilst it hasn't got the belt on it may also sound "rough".

The pulley is fairly easy to remove and there is a grease retaining seal that you can carefully prise off and then repack the bearing with clean grease and press the seal back home.

Hope that helps

Alternatively you can buy new or a known good secondhand.
