Very bad oil leak
« on: 13 August 2010, 16:31:03 »

Hi guys, another problem that hopefully someone can help me with. Got a very bad oil leak at the front of the engine. Losing approx a ltr a week( although doing 700 miles per week) The oil is collecting on the tray at front of the engine bay. I dont think its the cam cover seal as i have cured this problem after a few attempts, but what about the camshaft seals , anybody had trouble with those? I cant see where the oil is starting its leak down the front of the engine, but i think its from near the top, hence the theory of the camshaft seals. I had one of them replaced about a year ago  when i had my cambelt replaced, but not with an original vauxhall one, got one from europarts. I have taken the cam belt cover off but cant see the seals, im guessing the cam belt etc would need to come back off to check the seals?

Update your Profile with the type of car, engine etc. & where you are in the World, & you'll get a clearer answer  :y

A quick search reveals it as a 2001 2.2 cd, although a location isn't forthcoming from the same search. It will need investigating further but I'd guess at either cam seals or crank seal. If you're local to me I'll have a look for you Bubb's ;) :y

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

You won't be able to see the cam seal faces for the sprockets, but you should be able to see the oil runs below the sprockets, if that's where it is coming from?  You should be able to determine whether the leak is coming from the crank seal though (as long as you don't have a bad back  ::)) :y

Right then.... Aux belt off (but draw a diagram of the belt path as it's a pain trying to figure it out afterwards) then cam belt cover off and look for oil trails :y

It was more to figure out where the oil run starts, not noticed that in the original message though  :-[
