MOT Failure
« on: 16 August 2010, 18:56:12 »

Just had an mot and failed.  It failed for for incorrect colour headlights (they are the blue lens bright white but legal wattage) incorrect headlamp aims, which he is going to fix for free on the retest, he would have passed it if my handbrake was of similar strength.  N/s was 276kgf and offside was 71 kgf so priced up new pads as he said they couldnt seee but hear a slight grind when spinning the wheel.  Iv looked through the guide for rear and parking brakes is it a long job and how difficult is it if someone had done it on a 2.0l.  Would you be able to see the parking brake pads? i thought they were enclosed.  any other helpful tips for replacing handbrake pads would also be gratefully received.  Cheers

The handbrake uses brake shoes, not difficult to change, the adjusters on each wheel are at the top and accessed through a hole in the drum.

Thanks both.  Could the adjuster have come loose on the 1 side???.   If not im hoping it could be as easy as stripping down and freeing up the seized parts Robg.  Im pretty handy but have a good mate to help me through things and pretty handy around anything so fingers crossed

Servicing the Hand brake isn't too tricky, the hardest bit is putting the springs back on...

Just a word of warning though, when I took the springs of the back of the tensioners (connecting to the back of the hubs) they snapped, they are also a stealer only part (from my experience)...

These springs were broken on my car, handbrake expander return springs (Part number 9156405), available from dealers, approx £5 for the pair

The expander return springs pull the levers back when the handbake is in the down position, without these springs the expander may stay in the handbake on position and wear out the brake shoes

May as well try just adjusting the star-wheel on the side that's not working well, before you get into stripping it all down.  Unfortunately I don't think there's a hard-and-fast rule for which way of turning it is 'more' or 'less' shoe pressure, as the star wheel can be fitted either way round.

I think you'll soon feel if you've made an improvement by comparing how hard it is to turn each rear wheel with the handbrake lever at various 'clicks'.

Being an auto I rearely use my handbrake and sont use it on my drive as there are occasions the car is not used for weeks at a time.

My tester has told be to apply mine at least once a month, and use it a few times just before a test.

Helps everything moving and freed off. :y

i always use my handbrake and normally use neutral when parked (mine is auto too).  It didnt take too long to do i think all in all i was out there 5 hours but not just doing the handbrake.  I feel sorry for you if it took that long i bet it was frustrating, i was lucky enough to have someone help who had a pretty good idea of what to do before we started.  Had my retest and a flying pass, at last. Can finally breath a sigh of relief  :)
