is this a bad sign?
« on: 02 September 2010, 19:32:19 »

Got cam covers off today
First greeted by this,

yes that is a river of crud in the bottom
cam covers look like this

cams were ok,oil seems normal,if not a little too black,
heads were done at 69k,back in 2003 at a cost £665,ouch,glad didnt have it then

yup that is gaffer tape over the inlets, inlet manifold full of crud too,
So any thoughts or verdicts?this been seen before i hope :'(

hopefully just mayo from short trips...

what state is the dipstick in?

clean it up, clean the breathers, and some short duration oil changes, using GM Semi Synth oil ( some other oils are very prone to mayo, GM is better than most)

unusual for water to get into a v6 engine, normally leaks externally.

Where did you buy it?

If its had lots of stop / starts and shunts round a forecourt, that can do it.

remind me the exact history to your knowledge.....

just read your last few posts...and see its barely moved in a year....

its gonna need a very good service after standing like that.

ALL filters inc fuel etc
breathers
plugs etc which I guess you are doing, before you even think about brakes etc....

I wouldnt be too worried yet, once youve got fresh oil & filter in, get it running, get it hot, do 100-200 miles, and do another oil & filter change, and again in another 500 miles, or sooner if it needs.

Looks to me like that car needs servicing, then using properly.

98 MV6's do seem to have more HG issues than most the others for some reason, but normally an external water weep in the passenger rear corner of the engine.

This looks more like neglect to me.

Crikey.  Did the previous owner live near a deep ford? (no not the swear word).

hmmm interesting the heads have been done before, £1 to 1p that was a mis-diagnosis, but depending on parts used, could affect longevity afterwards  :-/

even with all that said....I think I would be going for the major service, and take it from there, given that last year I dont think what youve shown is conclusive.  Compression test may show more...

Good luck with it  :y

also to add it won't stay running, cuts out as soon as foots off, though maybe cause so much crud in intake, was very little oil in plug wells
