Door swap, airbag?
« on: 24 July 2012, 15:43:19 »

Swapping a couple of facelift doors onto my M/FL and found quite a few differences and bits to swap over but sorted those. Just thinking on, the airbag sensors in the doors look identical and are riveted in but does anyone know of a difference between the models? Don't want to chance safety but possibly do more harm than good in drilling them out and reinstalling in the new door.

BTW if doing this yourself remember not to buy a manual windy door as it's a real pain in the ass changing over the electric mech  :'( :'(

Door sensors are the same (obviously handed). Only difference with the SRS system is the configuration of the main ECU, normally for the child seat sensor

Easy enough to drill out the rivets and use a few self tapping bolts to reinstall, the bolts that hold on the front wings are perfect...

Or do it properly, and re-rivet it  :-\

I'd disagree, rivets are a cheaper way of fastening components together, using bolts offers a more secure solution, also easier to remove if the need arises... :y

But you generally need access to both sides when using a nut & bolt, you don't with a pop rivet  ;) ;) ;)

All the door airbag sensors I've come across are fixed with 2 x torx bolts.  The only thing that I'm aware of that is riveted in place is the big black metal sheet in the lower door aperture.  This has nothing to do with the airbag system, but does have a label on it warning about the airbag system.  Just wondering if this is confusing you slightly?  :-\

Indeed I was talking about the large black riveted panel with the blue " sensor" attached. It had to be removed to get the loom out without damage and I re-rivetted it in, stupidly I switched the ignition on whilst the sensor was unplugged though so need to get airbag light re-set.

So much bitty stuff needed swapping over it was a real pain in the ass but at least my Mig is completely rust free now :y :y

True, but in this instance I suggested using self tapping bolts, as found on the front wings.

But you aren't using nuts and bolts. In fact, nuts and bolts on the plate would be quite fiddly. You're suggesting self tappers into a thin piece of metal not designed to accept them.

Given its a critical safety component, I'd stick with what the designers designed. And whats tried and tested. But thats just me...   ...seeing as I'm not as clever as the car designers...

It's Vauxhall we're on about, Dude, I reckon your being a bit harsh on yourself.

Also I only suggested the self tappers as a solution to the problems 'omegod' said he had regarding swapping over window mechanisms, in the past I have used them without issue to fit electric windows into the rear of a Cavalier. If I had to refit the plates holding the srs sensors in the doors then I'd use whatever Vx. used on the assumption that maybe they wanted the rivets to pop out, like a weak point designed into the manufacturing process...
