Newbie Question Time!
« on: 21 September 2010, 12:56:11 »

Hi all,

I'm on the hunt... I have my sights set on a 3.2 V6 Manual Estate Elite or MV6 with the LSD i occasionally hear about.

Q1) Whats the score with the whole LSD thing?  Which cars had it?

From nosing around this site it appears it was just the ex-TVP that had the cars with the LSD?  Is that correct?

My main reason for being so specific with what i want is that we have a growing family but i still would like something that i can have some 'spirited fun' in ;o)

Q2) What the main difference between the 3.0 and the 3.2 apart from the obvious?  Is there much in the terms of power and reliability?

Thank you!

to go back a step, only the police had access to 3.2 manuals, they were not issued to retail channels.  So poverty spec only. (although most things can be retrofitted.

not all of them have / had an LSD fitted.

Vauxhall's EPC will tell you if they left the factory with one...but that was a long time ago, and some have had them stripped off.

3.0 / 3.2
reliability is swings and roundabouts, coilpacks v DIS packs & leads
no EGR or SAI on 3.2
better manifolds / gaskets
power - 3.2 a little quicker, but really not much in it

Most ex plod had LSD not just TVP, Ive had a couple of London Met and Manchester ones that were LSD fitted, good fun in the wet not sure about scaring the family bit though  ;D

3.0 and 3.2 power wise, I personally dont think theres much in it, but some people on here will disagree.

Chris.

So am i on a hunt for the dreaded needle in a haystack or are they cars out there with the spec i require?

How do you know if the car has the LSD, is it a matter of jacking the rear end up?

Wont tell you much unless you can track the diff number, best bet is to test it for LSD, one wheel on grass or dirt, the other on the tarmac, loud pedal away whilst holding on tightly to the steering wheel.  :D

ha ha ha!!

Can you imagine that on the test drive with the seller standing there! lol

By jacking the end up and spinning the wheels in the same direction they should both spin together if there's a LSD fitted?

Not sure about that one, never done it but Im guessing the answer is no, as theres no real tourqe happening just by hand spinning the wheel.  :-/

With back off ground: If the opposite tire spins in the same direction, you have a limited slip differential.

If the opposite tire spins in the opposite direction, you have an open rear end. (if you pardon the expression) ::)

Depends on the type of diff - clutch based, yes; viscous, yes (I think, could be wrong on that one); helical (torsen etc), no, they'll behave just like an open diff.

I think the Omega is a clutch type, though?

If I was selling a Car with LSD, wouldn't have a problem with that or doing a standing start with the front wheels on some lock, not sure if I'd be happy letting the buyer having a go though, well, at least untill his paid the dosh up.  :y

Either way you still better of testing the LSD, just because its fitted doesn't necessary mean its working properly.

Any thoughts on the above them chaps?

I've seen a few of the same sellers appearing in the Cars For Sale forum, are they traders that deal specificially with Omegas?
