sits in the groove on the stat housing, i used a little bit of grease around the rubber seal.

There really is no need to shout, you question will get answered if you type normally as well. Its also nicer to read the question  ;)

There are two types of Thermostat Gasket.
There is a Square profile and a Round profile gasket. The square one will no way go in the thermostat housing needing a round profile gasket..
It should fit in nicely, and like Tunnie has said a smear of grease in the housing to hold the gasket in  :y

Is this the one you were given? If so then the original part No. may have been superceded ? :-/

Hi,
The thermostat supplied is correct number.  The seal ring should be 24447061

I hope you havn't fallen foul of the different housing flange thickness problem.  Many have!!!

Is the new thermostat housing flange the same thickness as your original one, or is it thinner. If it is the same you don't have the problem.
If it is thinner, you MUST use shorter bolts, (which should have been automatically supplied by VX with thinner flange type) or you could use a spacer under the bolt head. A 10mm nut is about right.

The reason for all this hassle is, that one of the tapped holes in the cylinder block is blind tapped, and if you have thin flange and long bolt it bottoms and doesn't tighten down the flange.

A bit of grease should hold seal ring in place while you fit the housing.

HTH

The new bolts dont come with a new thermostat housing, you need to ask for them.

I got caught by that one. I used 6 plain washers under each bolt head.

My car is a 2003 model, I was aware that replacement thermostats are thinner than early stats but I assumed that I would already have the thinner type on the car  :-/

It was the bolts and the seal not sitting in corrrectley so to get me out of trouble for getting to work tonight I threw the old one back in as I had some more advice from someone who knows a little more about cars that me that he thougt the stat was fine so im keeping my fingers crossed that after the contant flushing it  washed any muck out of the system. but if it hasnt then I will redo it next wkend now im armed with a few more facts
