changing my autobox
« on: 17 November 2010, 10:05:56 »

After accepting the fact my autobox will have to go ive gone and got meself two ar 35 (one to keep in the garage as a spare) as i was just wondering if there are any guides on the site ive looked and all i can find is guides on changing the atf(which i,ll be doing when the replacment box goes in also) ive got a rough idea just could do with a couple pics or so to help me out , i know offering it up will be a two man job and as its a 35 going into my 2.5 td i,ll need to swap the bell housings and tourqe converters or failing that if it is all too much as spare time is  rare thing for me does anyone know of any known reputable guys/garages in or around london that wil do the job properly and if so roughly what kind of labour charges is an acceptable amount to pay for this job.
Many thanks

You just need to change the bellhousings not the torque converter. I cant remember what i did exactly, but i disasembled the old box first to work out which were the bellhousing bolts. I think they are the larger ones inside. The other thing that is different to manual is you have to line up the thing in the middle of the torque converter to the tabs in the box. That may be common knowledge but took me a while to work out!

other than that, its just the weight of the box and the mess that could be tricky. Garage-D in watford would be capable as a personal recommendation :)

Are you sure about that GM? I seem to recall that you need the TC from the AR25 on a TD. :-/

Correct. The TD torque converter must be kept. One form a petrol engine will have completely different characteristics, if it even fits.

When you remove the gearbox do it with the converter , leaving it on the engine will get you wet with oil and may well damage converter seals when refitting box :y

And IIRC the other thing was to keep the box 'upright' (that is, bellhousing at the top, box stood vertical on it's end) when you remove the bellhousing..

I did none of that! Haha! Probably why i have to top it up every 5k! How do i fix that then as it must be the seals? I had to rush when i did mine and is the only auto ive ever done, manuals aplenty though :)
