Crankshaft pulley!
« on: 02 February 2011, 00:09:45 »

Started the motor, heard a loud snap, battery light goes on, but engine still running.   For the life of me cant turn the steering wheel.

Popped the hood and drive belt hanging loose.

Garage tell me crankshaft pulley is broke.  £220 smackers for parts (£193 for pulley), genuine parts. Is this right?

I got a 2002 2.2 dti with 97K on the clock.  Is this a common fault?

Grateful for thoughts.

If it's the Pulley, get one from a breaker.  I paid £15 for one a couple of months back. Apparently a rare failure.

Ah, mine is V6...... not sure if there is a problem with the DTi pulley.

The Pulley's dont break as such.  They have a rubber harmonic dampener which fails and the two metal parts of the pulley separate.   That was what happened to mine.  OP may have a completely different issue.  :y

pulley was hanging off, outer section broke off.  GM part was £192, there was a cheaper version for £70

So I suspect the rubber separating the two parts has failed.  Get a second hand pulley.  Say £20, and a belt, £20.  Jobs a good 'un.

hiya,
the crank pulley broke on my 2.2 dti, i didnt want to chance a 2nd one in case that broke aswell, got a brand new one from a vauxhall suppliers, it cost about £80, i`ll try and find the address and get back to you, i rang up and they sent it next day i think, i ordered a bolt aswell and i also replaced the oil seal which i got from vauxhall, the biggest problem i had was undoing the bolt, its very very tight, broke 2 wrenches.
after i did the job i noticed a noise and a vibration so i ended up putting a new belt and tensioner on, job done and everything been fine and that was 18months ago.

Mine went on my dti at around 98,000 miles - apparently it is common for these to fail at 90-100,000 miles.   Iirc pulley was £160 trade from local stealers.   Hardest problem was getting the bolt undone - someone on OOF suggested wedging a strong arm against the chassis and turning the ignition key - this worked when air guns etc failed.

Yep, Common enough problem, as previously stated the insides rip out of the the outer bits due to the rubber in between failing. If your tensioner  is loose/ sloppy, consider changing at same time.  When I had mine go, I replaced with a pattern pully for about £100 which has performed fine. One strange thing is that the tensioner retainer bolt snapped off about two weeks later and left me stuck once again! I suggest that this bolt is replaced if you alter the timing belt tensioner.
There is a l method of locking the engine to prevent rotation when attempting to undo the bolt, can't quite remember where it was, but suspect it is a dowel engaged into the flywheel though a hole provided for the purpose.
It is a hell of a job to undo the pulley fixing bolt, but it is not normally necessary to remove the air con heat exchanger to get to it. The bolt is about  inches long and  as thick as a big stick of rock!
