Fast and lumpy idling
« on: 10 February 2011, 21:30:54 »

The wife has used the car 4 times this week and when I started it for her this morning it was trying to cut out, if you tried to flip the accelerator nothing at all happened, let the car role down the slight inclined drive and when level about 20 seconds later all was well, sent her on her way and she reported no problems.
We went out in it tonight and now in neutral the idle speed hits around 2000 revs then drops and slowly increases again, occassionally flipping the accelerator sorted it but mostly made it worse!
Any ideas  :-/

Have you checked for fault codes by doing the pedal trick?

Try that first.

Sounds to me like the throttle body sticking (give it a clean out with some carb cleaner)or possibly an air leak somewhere. (chafed pipe that leads to the brake servo is a common one).

Going to do that tomorrow when she has finished with it, the fast idling only happens when the engine is warm, the cutting out is first thing in the morning but today it was fine!

Checked the pedal trick, spent ages watching back a video I took and watching it live but really struggling to keep up[with the flashes!

In this order;
0173 fuel trim mal'
0170 fuel trim mal'
1700

Virtually impossible to clean without causing damage

Took off and blew over it with mouth! could not see any bits in the delicate sensor anyway

Hi Kevin, I had these codes last year and was told it was possible that it was the maf but as the EML light is permanantly on it was also possible other issues causing the 0170 and 0173, I really want to finally sort this so do you think now I have the throttle issues this does look like the MAF.
To add to all this when I took it for a run out yesterday all was fine until the journey home (engine had been off about 15 mins so was still warm), I started the engine and when pulling away EML flashed so as always suggested I pulled over until it stopped flashing then I went on my way only to find I had no power even in a low gear I could not reach more than 50mph EML still on but NOT flashing this time.(this was not limp home mode as I know what thats like due to my auto box fault)
So I pulled over switched engine off and started her up again and all was fine got home with full power and no issues.
Regarding the MAF I know there are cheap ones and arguments to go with buy or not but the genuine ones do seem rather expensive and I don't want to spend upwards of £70+ for something that might not be the issue.
Also why is the car displaying same codes multilple times?

It might be worth starting it without the MAF plugged in. It won't run very well, but if it starts from cold OK and the throttle response is better it does point the finger at the MAF.

Some live data from a code reader would be handy at this point.

Put a new MAF on today, took off plenum and cleaned breathers(had been done last May), oil change and filter, cleaned everything with carb cleaner, one of the rubber air inlets into the plenum had a touch of oil in it, started ok and now seems to have even more umph, idling fine but will see what it's like cold tomorrow. :-/
One thing that suprised me was when I took the front coolant pipe off it almost exploded in my face seemed to be under great pressure don't remember that happening when darthlooknee did the cam covers :-/
