3.0 L cams in a 2.5 - Advice please :)
« on: 22 February 2011, 12:32:13 »

Hey guys...

So I've heard that putting cams from the 3.0 into the 2.5 gives increased performance.

1) Is this actually true?  And what are you opinions?

2) Will I need to change ECU map etc or any other work besides just changing the cams.

I'm considering this now as I have to prob do:
Cambelt - (No service history and had the car a year already! altho garage who did major work on engine said it looked fine..  it needs to get done ASAP after MOT)
Rocker Cover - Broken round the oil filler hole, currently being bodged with silicone.
So, if I was going to fit different cams, the time would be soon! (AKA at the same time as all the above)

Thanks in advance. :)

Hi Julian

Yes it works. You'll get another 18bhp, power most noticable in the higher part of the rev range.

No, you won't need to remap.

What's your location? I'll do your cambelt kit as a freebe if you get the parts adn you're not far away  :y

Kind regards,
James

yep, remap not required.. however , I have the feeling/idea that cam change will give better results (if we ignore the increased consumption) also in low rpms if a remap is done.. but not seen or heard an example yet :-/

Thanks guys for the responses so far.

Are there any Cons to doing this?  (apart from consumption)
How much should I be expecting to pay for second hand cams?  I've seen elsewhere £75...?

Wow, thanks James.  That's really nice of you mate :)  I take it you've done a few before?
I'm in Brum, but I guess travelling's not hard, as long as we got the jobs finished of course!

My personal opinion is that for what's pushing a 2 tonne car, the cam change doesn't make enough difference to warrant the work - unless the engine is open for surgery already.

Bear in mind you'll have to remove the cam covers (and gaskets) to do a cam change - so you'll need a new gasket set, bumping the cost up a further £75.

My advice is to make sure the engine is very well serviced so it's giving optimum performance.

Well in excess of 60 ;)

I used to run a mobile mechanics business for Omegas, but, due to life and career changes I couldn't keep it up.

I still like to get my hands dirty now and again though, hence will sometimes offer a freebie to a local lucky member ;)

It's a serious offer - if you get a cambelt kit, water pump, and aux belt (and antifreeze) I'll do the job for nowt. You're only 50 miles from me  :y

Get the 3.0 sandwich plate that goes between the inlet manifold and heads as well if you can ;)

Had them done on mine about 2 years ago..(bought from James cdxv6)

They were replaced at the same time as a cam cover gasket change so to me the extra cost was a minimal extra as we did the cam shaft seals as well.

I was and still am impressed by the extra beans it has especially when you hit 4k revs as for a heavy car it really does get a shift on.

If you have engine work to do then worth it imho although engine really needs to be young enough to justify the cost..mine is now on 175k and wouldnt have considered it now.

Thanks guys.

(sorry to bump this thread a little, but have been busy with other stuff recently  :) )

Sounds like it's a beneficial / noticable upgrade.

Some points:
Would love to take you up on your offer James.  Car is in for MOT as we speak.  Will have to see how it goes and what needs fixing to get it passed first.  After the legal stuff is done, I can focus on this camshaft/cambelt/camcover topic.
And yes, since all the things are similar they can be done in one go I imagine, so "engine is open" and it would be worth the effort.
@ amba: It felt weak today between 4-6k revs, but I think it got better after a long "hot" run on the motorway/A roads before I dropped it for MOT.  I normally feel it kick in a bit when it reaches 4k.  Don't know if it's multi-rams, or just BHP peak etc, but it felt like that kick was missing. But I'll put all that in another thread...lol
Also although I have ~130k on clock, it apparently had reconditioned head, bottom half and new head gaskets just before I bought it (a year ago).  Done by the dealer's mechanic.

Some questions:
How will this affect emissions (test)?  (topic currently on my mind!)
What is the sandwich plate Pete?  That the black bit under the intake?  (lol vauge, but u prob know what i mean)  How is is different to 2.5 / how does upgrade help?  And asuming it gives wider holes, does this mean I need to change inlet bridge too?

(Perhaps if tuning up, I need to think of the big picture as a whole? lol)

Thanks again everyone

Cams are normally sold with the sandwich plate, which is a bit different sizewise.  The inlets are stamped 25 or 30, never really looked how they vary.
