Engine flush?
« on: 07 March 2011, 09:15:56 »

Giving my mig a good service today, the top end is a bit tapety so thinking the lifters are gummed up and thinking of using some Wynns engine flush, change the oil then add some lifter treatment.

Anyone advise against using the flush as something in the memory bank tells me this was not reccomended at some time?

lifter treatment is ok, engine flushes are not recommended.

They can clear out too much rubbish too quickly, and block strainers etc.

best bet is to do some short (500-1000) mile oil changes which will have the safe effect but be much gentler on the engine.

the lifter treatments can help a little.

If it was me....

Id do an oil change, and add the lifter treatment.
then in 500 miles, drop the oil and filter.  and refill normally.
then keep a careful eye on the oil condition for the next 1000 miles, changing again as soon as it goes dark, then prob revert to 3-5000 mile changes depending on oil colour.

One of the things with LPG is the oil doesn't change colour, stays golden for ever! Cheers mate, did a bit of research and decided against the flush :y

id do an oil change, with lifter treatment then.
change in 500 miles, then revert to your normal servicing

Not strictly true, it just takes longer to darken.

As LPG, do it on mileage :y

Should add, in my experience, the lifters don't usually recover, irrespective of flushing, oil changes or lifter treatment.

Replacement lifters are the answer.

I used wynns lifter treatment six weeks ago for a noticable tap from my top end,the lifter treatment has completley cured it no tapping even after car has been left for a few days, and i did not change the oil ( instructions on bottle of lifter treatment says you dont need to do a oil change at the same time ),obviously if yours is due a oil change then change it and add the lifter treatment  :y

And how much will new lifters set me back?
