Elite Estate suspension weight capacity?
« on: 22 March 2011, 08:56:05 »

No, not in relation to towing, but more in relation to what I can put in the boot!

Obviously too much weight would just fall through the boot floor.. but I have a need to temporarily store an engine soon (while the garage gets knocked down and rebuilt) and I have nowhere dry to store it..

But I could back the Omega up to the garage and pop the engine in using the crane, sitting on some sheets of flooring to spread the load.

The only thing is.. the engine weighs some ~350Kg (it's a 6.4L Ford V8 from 1963, one big lump of cast iron!) and I have no idea if the suspension will buckle under the weight or if the car will just groan a bit and pump the shocks up.

I wouldn't be driving the car around with it in, obviously, other than off my drive into the visitors parking out of the way.

Madness or no? Failing that I'll get a little 500kg capacity trailer and put a tarp over it I suppose.

Actually, thinking about it.. this is little different to having two people my size in the back seats, really! So yeah..

Stupid question ;D

Just as a comparrison five fat blokes can fit into an Omega and they will weigh more than 350kg without it collapsing.I know it's not a very scientific answer but if your self levelling suspension is working properly it should be ok for the short term imho.I'm sure there must be a better wat of working it out though.

if it's any help - I used to regularly carry a 500kg pallet[1] of printing ink in the boot of my 2.0 omega estate without a problem [2]

[1] loaded with a forktruck - that used to get some gawping from the customer's when they thought they'd have to unload it by hand - only car I've known where the boot opens far enough to get a forktruck up to the bumper
[2] and before anyone says anything, it was adapted as van with a bulkhead and restraining straps...
