oil pressure and lifter/tappets question
« on: 23 March 2011, 03:16:35 »

I got this car about 2 months ago, It needed 2 valves replacing.  I have rebuilt everything and the hydraulic lifters were very noisy when I fired it up, I expected it to go away when the car had run for a while but it did not.

I removed the valve covers and found out that the hydraulic lifters were not making contact with the cam lobes and this is where the noise was coming form.

So I took everything back apart and removed the lifters and cleaned them according to instructions on the internet.  I put everything back together and fired the car back up.  This did not fix anything and they are still noisy.

I removed the oil fill neck and I can push down on one of the lifters so they are not filling with oil, also when the engine is running it does not splash any oil out of the oil fill hole in the valve cover.

My question is should it splash oil out of the oil fill hole in the valve cover when running? the gauge shows I have good oil pressure but I hardly see any oil in the head.

Sorry for the long post

Short of fitting new lifters, have you tried wynns lifter treatment first? Is the oil pick up strainer blocked in the sump? Sometimes happens if flushed, although you did say oil pressure is good.

Not seen an engine run with no cam covers, but I have seen one cranked on the key. Cams turn surprisingly slowly. So might not splash oil at tick over... I guess. :-/

There are a set of T vents in the hed which control the feed of oil to the cams and followers.

One of thee can be removed with the cams in palce so its worth popping it out and seeing if its gunked up.
