Understeer help
« on: 10 April 2011, 20:55:59 »

I was going round a big roundabout at about 25mph turning right when the rear of the car seemed to try to overtake the front!!!! This caused big understeer.

I have had new rear springs a few months back,,,, could it be the shocks??????
cheers

Crap quality rear tyres will do it, but they must be poor to lose it at 25mph.

Sounds more like oversteer to me. ;)

If it only did it that once, likely a diesel spill or something, as said.

First thing to do, though, for peace of mind, is to check all the tyre pressures are correct and check tyre condition for uneven or excessive wear.

If you can reproduce it with hard cornering elsewhere (it can always be provoked by unsettling the car, I'm taking about smooth progressive cornering) then it's time to check the suspension over.

New uniroyal tyres & always at 30psi.
the car did not lose grip & skid, it was the body of the car lurching away from the chasis,,,,,, if that makes sense???

It is easy to check the shocks, just push every corner of the car and see if it immediately returns to normal position. If it doesn't it means the shock is knackered (change in pair).
But this backend problem you describe can be related to shocks only if there was some hole in that roundabout that would cause the jumping of the car and loosing trajectory.

It had done it about 10 times. Did not go over any holes. Rear seems slightly bouncy so will change them as they are only about £40 each from gm
Thanks for replys
