Autobox thrust washer repair - how much to machine
« on: 30 June 2011, 20:02:55 »

I am part way through the process of repairing a spare autobox and I have got to the faces where the old thrust washer sat.  Indeed the faces need machining but the otherwise excellent how-to does not state how much I can take off and whether both faces need machining or just the outer.

Anyone else done this?

Its the face that the thrust washer buts up against that needs machining and you machine off as much as is needed.

Then its a case of shimming the setup to get the clearances right again

Thanks Mark, I take it the shims go under the washer, I cant see how they would go on top.

Yes, under the washer.

Its the oil pump housing you machine as its this face that the new thrust washer runs on. The other face has no running surface on it so its not essentail to do anything with it.

If you run into trouble, I have a brand new 100 miles on it oil pump for an auto plus thrust washer and shims with same amount of use.

Quite heavy so postage would be I guess about £20 from Spain. Easy enough to fit so long as you keep the box upright!
