Which letters, AR25 is the 'lesser auto box' but fine for the model of Omega it is fitted, the AR35 is used on the 3.0 litre petrol and the 2.5 diesel, a strong box to cope with the higher 'torgue'.

AR - Automatic Rear wheel drive, the 25 is the amount of torque it can handle i think, 250 lbft and 350 for the AR35. (could be wrong there)  the autos in cavaliers etc are AF something or others.  I'm pretty sure the internals are the same for fwd and rwd boxes

the 2.5td was fited with the AR25 and thats why they dont last more than 120'000 miles.  BMW only used the AR35 with that engine, although they used the proper name for it, the GM 4L30E (handy if (or more likely WHEN) you need to fix it, Ive never had one that works yet)

I wish it had been, then I would not have had to buy an AR 35 to cope with the chipped torque on my TD!

all GM components are given a two-letter code, called an "ident". This is a unique identifier used on the production line and for spares. Usually on a yellow sticker.

AR25 is just a title given to the gearbox type by Opel, it's actually an Aisin-Warner 4L-35E.

regarding your transmission, I'd definitely replace only with another "ZG"

what problems would i face if i fitted one with diffrent letters lets say a ar25 dn or a dg.
