Wiring OE 6-speaker system - crossovers?
« on: 18 June 2008, 12:12:21 »

Quick stereo question: Are there crossovers for the front mid/tweeter speakers either on the loom or the speakers themselves? Or do the OE stereos have 6 speaker outputs? Only asking as I want to install a stereo at the weekend and looks like I'll probably have to do it pretty much from scratch, as Plod as left a lot of chopped looms in the dash.

Obviously the stereo I buy will only have 4 speaker outputs (I'm presuming), so how is it best to wire the 6 speakers if there are no crossovers?

Cheers,

Andrew

Assuming a non amp`d system.

The standard OEM stereo would have a four channel output to drive the 6 speaker system

Front left  + Front Right + Rear Left + Rear Right

The rear channels go direct to the rear speakers and supply a full range signal from the head unit to the rear

The wires from the front channels are split between the main speaker and the tweeter, but each cable will also supply a full range signal.

The larger speakers front and rear seldom have any form of crossovers attatched, although that can depend on the quality of the speakers fitted, but generally the paper cones were just plugged straight in.

The tweeters will have a small capacitor glued to the side of them and this is the crossover for the tweeters. Nothing more elaborate than that.

Hope this helps   :y

That's perfect! Cheers Dave.

It maybe that the orignal stereo leads and connectors are in tact - pretty diffilcut to tell as there are so many other looms and wires back there, and I've never seen one before. I'll have a look-see and a play about with a multimeter and see if I can identigy a live, ignition-live and an earth. Failing that, I'll just wire it up from scratch. I'm presuming that Plod has removed the speaker cables, just taped them up somewhere? So I should be able to figure those out.

There does appear to be something that looks like and aeriel connection, although not the kind that I am used to - same diameter but a lot flatter. If it's not and I can't find the aerial - tough. Don't think that I can be bothered with pulling all the roof lining and trim apart to fit one.

Oh OK, cool. Just wondering whether the lead up front with the connector still exists, after plod have installed & removed all their equipment.

Definately no crossovers fitted as standard.

If you want them

Facelift put them in the door panel in the armrest

Prefacelift stick them inside the door not too far above the bass driver - but avoid the door retaining bar.

A few of us have aftermarket speakers
