Removing the headlight for cleaning
« on: 21 February 2009, 17:36:26 »

Is there an idiots guide to removing the headlights on a facelift, or is it fairly straight forward and therefore not one deemed necessary?

Thanks.

Hmmm, there should be no muck on the inside, have a go at the outside with Brasso.

lift bonnet remove top 2 bolts, 8 mill i think.
Now the fidely bit.
Follow the plastic trim under the light inboard by the grill. There is a plastic fitting holding the end in place. On mine its a self tapping screw but the body shop bodged it when fitting a made in taiwan light. Yours i think should be a plastic peg through an expandable washer, push the peg through and remove this fitting whatever it is.

Now stick your arm through the gap under the light and feel for the 2 inch long tabs that hold the trim in place. Push them out from the back nearest first then the second one along nearer the wing. They are a push in fit and have a wedge on the tab to hold it in.

Once removed look through the gap. You will see the 3rd bolt holding the bracket to the chassis.
At this point you need an 8 mill( i think) socket on 2 guarter inch drive extensions to a quarter inch drive screw driver. The type that comes with a large socket set.
Or something along those lines. Tape up the sections and socket so they dont pull apart. If you have a magnet on a stick use it to catch the bolt or it can drop in the bumper. Put the assembly through the gap between light and bumper at the widest point near the rad and slide it along to reach the bolt and undo with magnet ready to catch it.

Lift the light out just enough to remove the connectors. From memory removing needs the light to come  inboard edge first and use the half moon cut out in the top member to clear. Something like that anyway.

Refit is reverse of removal except tape the bolt to the the socket or it will fall off and drop in the bumper.

If you dont have the tools to fit through the gap to remove the 3rd bolt you have to drop the bumper to get at it. Be atch!
