climate control

Might be a stupid question but when i switch my heater on,it seems to affect the revs of the engine like when you turn your a/c on,so does this use any more fuel? :-/

Unless you push the ECO button, the revs will drop because the A/C (or rather, Climate Control to give it it's correct name) is working by default.

Irf fuel consumption is a big worry, then a V6 petrol car is the wrong type of car for you  ;)  ;)  ;)
IMHO!  :y

The revs rise by about 150-200 rpm at idle to provide the "oomph" the compressor needs to work.

The compressor does "work" in compressing the refridgerant ... so uses energy, this energy will come from the fuel .. so yes ... using air con DOES increase fuel consumption.

HOWEVER .. the amounts are extremely small, and you will probably use about 100 miles worth of "aircon petrol" in one "traffic light grandprix" session !!!

I don't know the HP of the compressor, but on my Granada it was a shade under 5HP..... modern ones are, i believe, around 3HP. Now my Omega has 217 BHP .. so 3 is around 1.4%  ... so it will change your fuel consumption by the same amount. .... :)

BTW .. it is reported by some eco-warriors that driving with the windows and sun roof open increases fuel consumption by 7% ...

So it's actually better to use the Air Con ???

:)

I know the a/c uses more fuel, but what if you are just using the heater,is the compressor still being used.Just asking as i have never had a car that runs climate control. :-/ :y

Yes, if you are using the heater on a climate controlled system, the Compressor is running.

If you just want heat, and no cooling, then as KW said, press the ECO button and it will turn off the compressor

ECO = "ECO"nomy

Kind of a ironic that, as if you run ECO for too long the compressor will seaze up, and so its much more expensive  ;D

Good point !

Turn the air-con full blast, open all the windows and help to reduce global warming. the benefits of all that cold air must be far greater than the energy used to cool the environment

Running the aircon full time prevents the windows from steaming up.  :y

Oh yes you can ... but in an odd sort of way  !!! I was in Saudi, temp in the mid 30's, and left a motor running with the aircon on max boost to get in nice and cool, it was parked in the shade but was still pretty hot inside .... I got sidetracked by a question and instead of being 10 minutes it was closer to an hour .... went to the car and ALL the windows were completely steamed up ...... on the OUTSIDE ... inside of the car was at about 5 C .. bloody freezing !!! ... needless to say a quick 5 minutes in the sun and it all disappeared !!!

On a more serious note ... it can get bloody cold at night and windows do steam up just like here ..  :)

to save fuel I crack the sunroof tilt and turn the heater fan on medium with heat set at about 18 degrees (instead of running the air con and heat) to defrost the windows. Works well unless it's raining when I have to take the hit on fuel economy :(
