3) - I don't recall there being a LAW passed or amended or even MOT rules amended or modified, that states retro-fitted HID lights are in fact to be deemed illegal WITHOUT washers and levelling system fitted also.

If you look back at the constructions and useage legislation regarding your particular vehicle, the light setup will be clearly documented. No, it will not mention any retro fit items, but it is taken as read as far as vehicle legislation goes that any modifications to a car must meet with the legislation relating to that vehicle.

Yes, its quite easy to get the lights through an MOT if the pattern is good, but that does not actually mean that it complies with the law - your MOT guy SHOULD have failed it. And if you also check the constructions and useage legislation that has evolved over the years to other vehicles also, then you will see very quickly that it is manadatory for Original fitment HID bulbs to also have washers and levelling system fitted, and again, although retro fitment is not specifically mentioned, it is taken as read that any modifications must also comply.

A quick call to the D.O.T. or V.O.S.A. willl confirm this if you still don`t beleive it.

ive got xenons and they were alright for the plod when they had the car, so if mr plod thinks std xenons lights are good enough to chase chavs and villians at 130+mph then they good enough for me :)

Yes - but yours are standard fit from the factory, not retro-fitted!

As I've said - unless Plod or the MOT tester tells me to swap them back, they're staying on my Carlton.

Tonight was the first night that I have taken the MV6 out in the dark, along country lanes I usually travel every week at night.
You know what?
The Nightbreakers aren't as bad as I first though, so I'll have ice cream with my large slice of Humble Pie!!!!
