Door lock polarity on a Ford Ka.
« on: 05 February 2010, 21:13:17 »

Anybody able to assist?..my basic mechanics is passable but when it comes to auto electrics  I am a bit lost.
I need to wire up a remote central locking system on my daughters Ford Ka..2000 W reg.
Instructions tell me I need to find out if door is triggered by a Positive or Negative....how do I do this or can anyone with previuos knowledge of this car advise.
Thanks alot.

Easiest way to test.....

A length of wire with a 10amp fuse inline, one end to ground the other end touch on a trigger at the solonoid. If the fuse blows it's positive, if it locks then it's.

Are you local to me? I used to fit (still licensed to as well) Thatcham CAT1's ;)

Sounds fairly straight forward then....wish I was closer as would gladly pay for it to be sorted ...but alas I live in Kent !!
Do I need to remove door card and gain access to door lock motor ?  Will the lock only be positive when key is turned to lock or is current ther all the time.
I have looked inside door and have 4 wires.
White/Green.......Yellow/Blue....Black......Orange/Blue
so I need to check each inturn .

Odd question.... when was it first registered?

Ignore that! It's after Sept. 2000 which was the loom changeover.

Should be a negative system:-

Lock - yellow/blue
Unlock -  white/green

I will give that a try and see if it works....does the hatchback release the same way with a negative ? as would like that to work aswell.
Cheers.

Tailgate is the same polarity. Still test with the fused wire first. For the CL you can bridge off the black wire at the solonoid as that is a ground :y

Which remote kit are you fitting?

Its just a cheapy off ebay...little black box with aerial wire and plug fitting with about 10 coloured wires,so hope it is within my ability.
It has a  wire that is connected to "trunk release +12v"..so if switching is by a negative assume I will need to work out how to get that working when I get doors sorted first.
