One for DaveDND (what HU?)
« on: 22 July 2011, 13:35:29 »

Haven't paid much attention to ICE recently so I'm not sure "what's hot and what's not" as it were (I know to avoid Sony though).

I have a 1998 BMW 318 iS (4 door saloon) which still has the standard HU (radio/cassette) and speakers and I'm looking to replace it for a radio/CD player (single shot is fine).

I'm not interested in being heard from 10 cars away, and although I am a serious bass freak I'm not interested in liquidising my internal organs while driving (I have a Hi-Fi at home for that).
I do however like the sound to have some bottom end warmth, so I'm not interested in the cheap chinese crap that the likes of Maplin's sell.

All I'm after is something that will match the sound quality of the standard HU through the standard speakers and offers MP3 playback at the very least (WMA playback would also be nice, but not essential), and doesn't look out of place when fitted (current HU is black and single DIN).

I'm not interested in having line outputs, bluetooth, USB ports, SD card slots, or any of that other crap, and I don't want to spend lots of money either as I don't want a window put through by some idiot smackhead looking for his next fix.

I'm restricting the budget to £100 maximum as I'm sure that will get what I'm after with ease.
All & any recommendations gratefully received.

PS
Although the title gives the impression this is a question aimed at Dave, anybody else is more than welcome to post their personal opinions of hardware they currently own or have owned.

I'd say that popping into halfrauds (halfords) and having a look and play with there headunit stand I prefer pioneer myself good headunits and features on bottom end £100 an less headunits I'm using a kenwood at the minute that cost £150 its has a usb input which I prefer as I don't need a lot of cds in my car and I can plug my mobile in to play its stored music and charge it as well which is handy it has aux inputs and features I don't need but it looks good and flashes blue with the music lol but have a play at halfords see what you like from there then find a shop that sells them cheaper or ebay but I will say one thing Do Not buy anything with RIpSpeed on it total rubbish

I`d suggest one of these

http://www.dndservices.co.uk/cz101er.html

as you would not be paying for all the extra features that you are unlikely to use - colour should match the dash also

Trouble strikes in series of three's, but when working on the car, the next job after a series of three is not the fourth job -- it's the start of a brand new series of three

Cheers for that Dave, and a bonus that the display colour matches with the rest of the dash illumination as well  :y :y
