car cut out
« on: 01 October 2011, 01:59:52 »

here is one for ya to chew over.i booted the miggy earlier(like ya do),then five mins later the oil light came on.i immediately pulled over checked the oil level which was ok.the engine was rattling a little but not much.I decided to limp home(about 10 miles) but only managed about 4 miles before the engine cut out.i pushed car to roadside and tried to start her but it was like the battery was completely flat.no battery light came on while it was running.all the lights were dim and none of the electrics wanted to work.ive put the battery on charge, but the car showed all the signs of the drive belt snapping but it is still intact.i had to get my poor elite recovered home under the cover of darkness and i need to try and revive her before monday.Help please guys my Miggy needs you

I'd do a drop test on the battery first and see if it's holding a charge  :y

Failed alternator? Electrics do funny things when that goes suddenly ime. Apart from the dash lights behavior, it sounds exactly the same as when mine failed.  :-\  later found the alternator go be covered in oil from failed cam cover gaskets. Weather that was the cause, who knows.

I guess print off Kevs battery test(?) guide and take that and a meter with you when you return with the battery. Test it, as the guide, and go from there...?

See what others say though, I am crap with electrics.

obviously oil pressure had dropped - hence oil pressure warning. Once the light has come on, engine is already on borrowed time, and is doing massive damage from the second it comes on

sorry its such bad news :'(

I'm not an expert, merely an educated idiot,  but my guess would be oil pump failure or pickup blockage, leading to engine failure....

, i'm afraid i don't see a quick, or cheap fix for that....     hard lesson to learn, NEVER try and limp on an oil pressure warning.....   switch it off immediately and get recovered back home , and investigate the cause....   because it is NEVER good....
