Heater Pipe connection Water Leak - how do you seal it ?
« on: 02 November 2011, 22:47:06 »

:'( Hi all - hopefully just a quick couple of questions - but probably not a simple answer  :(

In the photo below - the lower pipe that has a green band round it (below the one with the purple coloured band) is leaking:

It looks like there is a tie wrap type band that has snapped (the green bit) and hence the joint is leaking.
Q1. What type of clamp is it and how do you fix/replace/repair it - is it a Vauxhall special  :-[
Q2. In the interim to minimise the leak - is it possible to isolate this part of the heater pipework by turning the climate control 'OFF' - or am I dicing with a major artery here that if it comes adrift is going to steam clean the back of the engine for me  :o.

I need to know if I can get by until I can get it booked in asap by carrying a couple of gallons of water with and keep it topped up - or should I be limiting my journeys to a minimum in case it lets go ?? (I'm doing about 150 miles a day in it - and it stinks )

Any guidance much appreciated - cheers
Ian.  :y

Those clips are a quick release affairs, or at least removal is quick if you know the technique :( , fitting I believe is simply a case of pushing on firmly until there's a click, which might be worth a try?

If the quick release fitting is damaged (as you suggest) I doubt its fixable. You will need to replace the hose.Up to you as far as using it goes - depends how lucky you fell I suppose. If its only weeping and you need the car desperately you may have little choice.
Needs fixing asap. If it does come off then it will steam clean the back of your engine and you will be stuck at the roadside. ;)

Part required is VX only and is connected to the HBV as well at the other end and then has a T which goes down to the coolant transfer pipe at back of block,so a specialist peice of pipework.

Suggest buying new not second user as quite fiddly to refit so not worth doing it twice imho

Pic of the connector here http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90557.0

Any reason to think that hose has been disturbed recently so might not have been refitted properly?
The green bit can be thrown away, its only needed in the factory.

If it has not been fitted properly then removing the connector and cleaning the end of the metal pipe before refitting is all that is needed; but if one of the internal O rings has perrished then disturbing it is going to cause a bigger leak so choose your moment to play with it.

Thanks everyone - really helpful info here. As it's leaking (dripping) even without the engine running I've decided not to gamble and it's gone in to be looked at today.
The mechanic at the garage was familiar with the connection and confirmed your comments about it being specialist VX pipe  :( (he's done one recently).

They'll have a look to see if it will re-seal and let me know - cheers again.  :y
If they need to change the pipe - they may aswell do the rad while they're at it as that is also leaking ....

they jusy ain't happy unless they're leaking from somewhere are they  :P

Cheers
Ian.

I had one of mine go on the derv, I just cut off the quick-coupling part and used a hose clamp  :y
