Anyone seen this on ITV? If so, what do you think? Wasnt aware of the programme until a few people at work mentioned it to me as they know our youngest has aspergers and dystonia. I understand that quite a few parents with "special needs" children have got a bit upset over the title but must say that the people who told me about it said they understood a bit more now what it must be like. Having watched episode 1 today with the better half I thought it was pretty good. As for the title, personally I dont think it was as "tabloid" as some were making out. At the end of the day of course no child (special needs or otherwise) is "perfect" because the very word is almost meaningless as all children are different and all have their foibles if you like just as us adults do. But please lets not get so bloody precious/PC over what common sense tells you the title is referring to-ie those with children who do not meet the criteria for "normal" particularly when it concerns behaviour and how, still, there are the remnants of stigma attached to such children. Those parents who may blame themselves.Those parents who ask "why?". Those parents whose children have often been failed by the healthcare/educational system in terms of diagnosis or support. Those parents who feel like they are battling alone.Those parents that are winning some battles if not the war. Any programme that raises better awareness surely cant be that bad? Just remember that recent TV programme on the Queen mother's institutionalized relatives and how-until very recently-we treated all those children on the autistic spectrum. Its not just about medical/genetic understanding its about attitude.

yes, i did. found it quite informative & emotional tbh. almost a wake up call as to what these people go through.

I watched this and yes it was interesting, however I would question the 10 year old getting a diagnosis of Autism in 20 minutes despite not displaying the primary traits of Autism............I stand to be corrected, not looking for an argument........but I have personal experience of Autism...

The little girl who did not speak at school but did at home, I know a family where it is the other way around and Mum is at her Witt's end....

Yes, watched it last night, we too have a vested interest as our eldest is diagnosed with Autism.
That diagnosis, yes, may be correct, he WAS on the autistic spectrum, but theres more too it than that im sure.  Autism covers such a broad range though.

I see your point about the "20" minute diagnosis Vamps, but equally I find it hard to believe (given the majority of the people we have encountered in childrens services in Norfolk) that this lad was 10 before he got some sort of diagnosis of autism. To both me and SWMBO he certainly came across as being on the autistic spectrum, though as Jimbob so rightly says, the spectrum is vast. True, some of his behaviour doesnt match what are regarded as classic or typical traits but theyre not totally definitive. Also good to see the use of some more esoteric treatments as I think that it is important not to just go down the more accepted surgery/drugs route and to be open to options like acupuncture/reiki/shiatsu/quigong etc. After all, such treatments have been a part of Asian cultures for centuries so you'd think there would be something to them!

didnt see it  so cant comment on programme  but i have friends whose kids have autism and other problems  and to their parents they are perfect  as my mate says they will deal with and overcome anything put in their way

Couldn't agree more 

IMO, society over the last 30 years feels the need to put everybody in some sort of catagory 
Anybody who doesn't fit into their idea of normal is classed as either this or that 

My cousin's lad is autistic.
Somedays, he is a total nightmare and somedays you could not tell him apart from any other "so called" normal kid.
During his childhood, initially, he was diagnosed with aspergers.  Next it was dyslexic, then they got round to calling it autisic 
For 10 years, that kid was dragged from pillar to post, poked and prodded and had every type of test they could think off 
My cousin was reported to social services for child abuse because of the noise that he would make.
She ended up getting nicked because she collered one on the social workers in town one night and after a few words were exchanged, little miss social worker ended up with a broken nose 

Bottom line is .............. Jaimie is her son / my 2nd cousin ? and a part of our family and NOT a rather statistic in a category 

My upmost respect to anybody on here who's family have any problems like this
