LPG pipe fittings, is this right ?.
« on: 07 December 2011, 21:12:33 »

Nearly finished the plumbing, but I am a bit worried about the fittings I am using. last time I had to sweat blood to get the 8 or 6 mm metal ends onto the poly pipe, but this time the stuff I got from Tinsley Tech goes on a lot easier.

OK some force needed to get the metal middle into the pipe, but the olive slides on and the nut the tightens up fully without any sort of feedback it is getting tight. It screws up fully with out excessive force ?.

Surely it should clamp onto the plastic pipe and make sure it is sealing.

And when I tried to put it into the multivalve, the inlet is counter bored and the pipe only goes in about 5.5mm, including the countersink for the olive. I estimate the pipe is only supported 3.7mm which is not a lot for 8mm pipe.

Does this look OK ?.

Are the brass barbs a snug fit for the I.D of the hose, Ken?........if so then (it would seem) the split-collet is there purely for mechanical grip on the hose`s O.D. :-\

Agreed on the shallow insertion depth beneath the ferrule; but might the presence of the olive and the height of the nut above give sufficient 'advantage'? :-\

Thanks Debs, Yes the insert is quite a tight fit, I can push it in up to the first barb, but then have to hit it with a hammer to get it in the rest of the way. Sorry I'll rephrase that. I then put a deep socket over the end and hit that, so the force is transferred to the shoulder.

Re the olive and nut, you may be right, and I am just worrying unduly, just other fittings like the filler and the 8mm to 6mm adaptor have the pipe in a good 12-15mm before bottoming. I am worrying it might get knocked sideways, as 3.7mm is not a lot to support 8mm pipe.

The pipe and fittings are made in Italy  :'(  ;D

Dip the ends of the polyflex in boiling water for a few minutes, then use a little fairy liquid on the barbs if they are a challenge to get on.

I suspect it'll be OK as long as the polyflex adaptor inserts fully in to the olive. Proof of the pudding is in whether it  smells of eggs once it's working. ;)

Yes they are differant. If it feels tight on the polly pipe then go with it.... rather than tight on the fitting so its reached the end of the thread but hasmt nipped on the pipe.
Give pipe a good pull see if i stays put.
