SWTSMBO went shopping this afternoon in her clit. Returned to find a note on her windscreen :

"reg no" Light Blue Ford Fiesta 02.05

"phone number" not my fault witness only

sure enough an inspection showed a heavy scrape on the drivers side rear wing. No idea on the actual damage as it is a) dark blue, b) very dark outside, c) persisting it down.

I've called the number and had a good chat with the guy, he and his wife are both prepared to make statements to Insurance and Police. They watched an elderly female driver make a complete horlicks of parking, hit the clit, get out an look, repark, walk away. So they left the note.

Insurance company have been very good, used their system to check the reg and the Fiesta is insured, we now know the company and policy number Insurance are going to "investigate and enter a claim on our behalf"

Police have been helpful as well, although they will do nothing for 24 hours in case the other party actually comply with the Road Traffic Act and report the incident. If they don't they will take a statement from my witness with the view to a prosecution for Criminal Damage.

Pain in the butt, especially if the damage is slight, and as she has a £350 excess, it'll be money spent "upfront", but hopefully all reclaimable from the other party.

So, a BIG THANK YOU to that nice man who saw an incident and then did something about it

That makes a nice change doesn't it! You sometimes think you have to give drivers the benefit of the doubt that they weren't aware of any damage, etc, but in such blatant cases it's as well somebody was watching. The fact that they are prepared to make statements etc is outstanding

Happened to Emma about a year ago.

Insurance company were good about it, found the third party and made a successful claim. Police were initially helpful, but then decided they couldn't trace the third party despite having a registration number, witness accounts and CCTV footage.

I hope it gets sorted.

Shame about the damage E - but it's encouraging to see that some people will step up when it's needed, well done to them.

A good while ago I worked at an Airport CarPark and have witnessed many incidents like the one you have described.  As always, a note was made in the office of the 'offenders' reg number, time and date of the accident including a description of the driver.  Helped along with CCTV, I presume most, if not all, claims were sucessful.

Unfortunately, most of the incidents involved an elderly driver.

Most of my working day now involves driving, and I see countless 'OAP's' who really are unfit for the road.  It would be a shame to remove their freedom, but when they are a constant risk to themselves and others, what other option is there?  I'd like to see a compulsary test for drivers when they hit 60, and then a compulsary re-test every 5 years thereafter.  As far as I'm aware, just an eye-test is required and if necessary corrective lenses are to be worn if the eye-sight is not up-to-scratch.

My own Mother (62) hasn't reached the age where she requires an eye-test, but her vision is quite poor without glasses.  If it weren't for my words of wisdom "If you have an accident, they WILL test your sight and you WILL be proved neglegent, probably uninsured and face prison" then she wouldnt be wearing specs behind the wheel now.

To you Entwood, I'm glad the stranger had the good-will to make the necessary note and help your Wife in the process of getting her car repaired in the correct manner.

nice too see people are willing to put themselves forward for what is right just a shame the offending driver did not have the good manners or respect to leave a note themselves..i bet they will be wishing they did at some point in the near future

As for the re-testing on OAP's... I disagree. I think everyone should be re-tested periodically as it's not just OAP's who are a danger. I don't think the periodic assessment should be concentrating on the basics of driving (as in the initial test) but on overall competency and safety behind the wheel

Indeed. In every other discipline involving a safety-critical skill (flying being the obvious example) there is a continuous process of re-assessment and training required to retain that privilege. With driving we receive tuition on only the most basic skills and are left to fester from then onwards.

If you are competent there should be nothing to fear from a regular assessment. If you're not, you should hang up your driving gloves anyway.
