Home entertainment system
« on: 09 January 2012, 09:43:37 »

Having had the same old Tv for 12years now we have decided to upgrade. We are going to get an LG 3D tv but the problem is the surround sound system and harddrive recorder. Asking in Currys it seems to get a surround sound with blu ray player, you have to buy a hard drive recorder seperately which also comes with a dvd player thus doubling up on two items. Does anyone do a blu ray, dvd, hdd and surround system in one package. Maybe someone on here knows a system that may work as my knowledge of entertainment systems ended when I last bought my old tv.

Cheers

Whatever you do, do NOT buy an "all in one" sound system that is integrated in to a Blu-ray player or whatever, they invariably only offer an analogue input for other sources and you will soon regret it.

Give us a clue as to what your budget is and we can take it from there.

Well the tv is costing about £799.00 and looking at a budget of around £800.00 for the rest of the system.

A quick Google found me a Samsung BD-D8500 Blu-ray player/HDD recorder that seems fairly feature packed for £260, so that leaves us just over £500 for the sound system.

Now, do you want to go down the hi-fi seperates route in terms of amplifier & speakers, or are you looking for something that would use a slightly smaller footprint?

Size dosen't matter as i was also hoping to install the system away from the tv out of sight under the hallway stairs. That Samsung does look quite good thou.On another note, as I was planning on having the system away from the Tv under the hallway stairs can you get a remote to still work if the system has not got a direct line of sight even thou the signal has to go thru a wall.

If the remote uses Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or some other form of radio transmission then the answer is yes. However every remote I've seen for home entertainment equipment uses Infrared light, which means the receiver has to have "line of sight" with the transmitter (remote control).

If you are happy to have a full sized Hi-Fi amp next to the TV, then Richer Sounds (who I'd also recommend to buy from) have a number of options that are within your price range.
A quick search of the Richer Sounds website found the Onkyo HTS5405 package which might work for you. I know they don't show the price on their website, but the smaller brother to that amp is priced at £179 and I doubt for one minute that the chosen satellites & sub are going to exceed £250 or thereabouts.....so that package is more than likely within your budget.

If you don't like the idea of having pre-chosen components, £500 at Richer Sounds is more than enough to get you a semi decent 3D capable HDMI amp that along with your chosen speakers/sub will provide a more than acceptable end result for the money you are spending.

If having a full sized Hi-Fi amp sat next to the TV doesn't appeal to you, I'd suggest something along the lines of the Logitech Z906

I have the predecessor (Logitech Z-5500) to that particular system, and even to this day I consider it worth every penny of the £300 I paid for it 4 years ago. I originally purchased it as a sound system for my (now long gone) desktop PC, but I was so impressed with it's overall performance I decided it was a viable replacement for the ridiculously overboard hi-fi setup that I was using for the TV/DVD, etc.

I can confirm that the technical specs haven't been manipulated in any way in order to make the system look more impressive than what it is, it really will deliver a true 500 watts RMS if you drive it at full tilt.
Richer Sounds won't do the Z906's, but if you shop around you should be able to get them for £300 as opposed to the Logitech RRP of £329 (assuming you like them that is).
