Power Steering pump diagnose?
« on: 14 January 2012, 03:01:02 »

have read previous post relating to steering but still unsure so posting for advice.

Im pretty sure iv topped up the power steering resevoir recently, but lately noticed the power steering being sluggish (parking times mostly) on several occasions. today checked the fluid level see its low (dipstick on the lid aint touching it).. As dark left it for tommorow to check and maybe tighten the jubilee clips.. But in the meantime wanted to know:

1. Is there any method to find out for sure the power steering pump is Knackered?
2. Do i have the servotronic relay (red) behind the glovebox or thats only on PFL.
3. if the jubilee clips are tight, is there another location which is known to leak?

Thanks!!  :y :y

If it's losing fluid to the point you can't see it in the PAS reservoir, this needs looking at.... sort the known issues first ;)

I'd start by trying to identify the leak, in daylight :y :y

its not completely empty, the fluid is still visible but not enough to touch the dipstick on the lid..

if losing fluid to that extent then i would think you almost certainly have a leak. Need to trace the source of the leak 1st imo ;)

checked tha hose from the reservoir (top hose) it was shining in power steering fluid. the jubilee clip seemed tight,  :-\ so wondering could it be possible that the hose wall over time has become porous???

There was a tis update many moons ago to upgrade dex 2 to dex 3 for pas fluid. This was reversed after the pas pipes became porous... As you describe. Or so the story goes anyway.

Wonder if it's had dex 3 in it...  :-\

By what your saying, most probably it might have dex3 in their? i was thinking to empty out only the reservoir and top up with dex2, or is there a better way of flushing it out?  :y

This may sound silly, but check that the hose is actually pushed onto the reservoir nipple. I have seen two now that because that under pipe goes very hard, plus it looks to be on the nipple you assume it is..... but like I say I have seen two that were not on at all, so the jubilee clip was tight onto the pipe not pipe & nipple, so oil was leaking from there.

Hope that makes sense :y

IMO, If your sure the pipe is porous and not poorly fitted or split...

...pull the return pipe off the reservoir, start the engine and pump the old fluid out into a pot. Replace the pipes. Re fit. Refill with DEX2 ONLY, start the engine and re fill until the fluid level settles and is correct.

Are both pipes showing the same porous signs? There is a feed and a return pipe, check both. If both are porous suspect dex 3 damage. If only one pipe, not dex 3 issues, and it's just a leak.
